Believe it or not, Japan has pledged to invest a staggering $550 billion in the United States — a move President Donald Trump is touting as "perhaps the largest" trade agreement in history. The US leader believes that the deal with this key Asian partner could unlock substantial profits.
"We just completed a massive Deal with Japan, perhaps the largest deal ever made. Japan will invest, at my direction, $550 billion into the United States," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, adding that the US "will receive 90% of the profits."
The president emphasized that Japan would open its market to US products, including cars and agricultural products. Meanwhile, the 15% tariff would be reciprocal, he added.
Trump had previously floated the idea of imposing import tariffs of 10%-15% on goods from as many as 150 countries. If enacted, only a few nations would be exempt from US trade duties.
